3 Basics Your Website Needs To Have In Order To Rank On Search Engines
It never ceases to amaze me when I see websites that some local businesses have put up on the web.
If you think that your website is your shop window and it’s job is to attract peoples attention to get them to stop in the first place.
What it should do is then gain enough of their interest for them to start reading your content or looking at other pages on your website.
Now if your website clearly shows what you have, gives them the detail and information that they need and it meets their needs and desires, the next step is to give the options, the Call To Action for them to either click on the ‘Buy Now’ button or call you for more information.
But before you get to any of that, your customers need to be able to find your shop window, your website first. If you don’t have the basics, your super duper website will be consigned to the wilderness forever.
So what are the basics that you need to include in order to get your website ranking on the search engines
- Enusre your website is properly optimised for the search engines – Title, description and keywords are ways that you let the search engine know you are there. Their ‘spiders’ use that information to find you and then rank you dependent on the search term entered by someone looking for a ‘Horsham Electrical Contractor‘ say. If you don’t have what you are or what you do in your title, ie ‘Horsham Electrical Contractor – Electrician in Horsham‘, have keywords that describe what you do and don’t have a brief description of your business and services, how can the search engines know where to put you in terms of rank?
- Make sure that your website is well designed and laid out, but above all, clear to navigate and read. I remember one of my first websites had the most amazing logo and header, but in order for anyone to know what my company did, they had to scroll down the page. That is a big no no! Remember this is your shop window. In order to grab their attention they must be able to see what you offer otherwise they will just walk on by
- Backlinks – Backlinks are the holy grail (in my humble opinion) of SEO and are an absolute necessary in order to getting your website ranked with the search engines. But all back links aren’t equal. If you see an advert that says it will get you 3000 back-links, personally I would run a mile. I would much prefer 2 or high PR rank backlinks, an .edu or two and have backlinks from websites that are slightly related to the content of my website. That will get you more search engine love than 3000, 6000 or 10000 backlinks could ever get you.
